The area around Vine House has something for everyone. There are sporting activities for the energetic, historic sites to visit for the less energetic, and beach resorts and leisure parks for the children. A good place to start is the city of Bordeaux (30 minutes). You can shop and sightsee or visit gardens and museums. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely supper at a restaurant before heading off to sample the excellent night life! Pair-non-Pair caves [click to enlarge]The atmospheric caves at Pair-non-Pair are just 10 minutes away. They date back 30,000 years and are incredibly impressive and moving. Prehistoric carvings and tools have been discovered in the caves and are the oldest ever found in Europe.

Château Branda [click to enlarge]Once occupied by the English King Edward III, the 14th-century Château Branda has been magnificently restored. Modern sculptures in the grounds complement the enclosed, medieval-style gardens and their fountains. The château is 15 minutes away and offers free wine and armagnac tastings.

St-Emilion [click to enlarge]Overlooking the Dordogne valley, the medieval hilltop town of St-Emilion is 40 minutes away. The pretty town is famous for its wine making, with guided tours available for touring the vineyards and the wine cellars.

Palmyre Zoo [click to enlarge]The busy coastal resort of Royan is 60 minutes away. Spend the day on the beach or visit the amazing zoo at Palmyre. The zoo occupies an area of over 30 acres and has 1,600 animals. It’s definitely a great day out for children and a trip that they’ll always remember.
The Atlantic coast to the south of Bordeaux is 60 minutes away. Golden-sand beaches extend south for over 150km and the coastline is bordered by the largest pine forest in Europe. Sand dunes [click to enlarge]Playa has the largest sand dune in Europe. Climb right to the top (if you’re feeling energetic) and admire the truly magnificent views of the beach and the ocean.
